If you are a fashionista with slender calves, your friends are probably jealous of your model-skinny legs. What they don’t realize is that the latest fashion trend can be harder for you to pull off. Tall boots are a necessity in every cooler weather wardrobe, but most designers only make boots for “average” size legs. This can make shopping for tall boots a nightmare. It’s sad to find a pair that you really love, but when you try them on they don’t fit.
Today you’re in luck! We have some tips for you for getting tall boots that are too loose to fit your slim calves!
Tip #1- Bulk Up Discretely!
This tip does not mean you have to go on an all-fast food diet of burgers and cheese fries. The bulking up can be achieved by wearing thicker clothing. You can try buying a pair of thick winter jeans; this should make your narrow calves a little wider. If there’s still a huge gap, you can try wearing knee-high fuzzy socks. You know, the brightly colored pair that you probably got in a Christmas stocking – those! If those paired with your jeans still aren’t enough, you can add a pair of long johns too! The order you put them on should be: knee-high socks first, then the thermal underwear, then your jeans over them, obviously. This tip has a high rate of success for making slim calves fit tall boots, but be warned: your legs will get toasty! This trick is a good idea only when it’s really cold outside, not at the first hint of Autumn.
Tip #2 Bulk Up with a Fashion Statement!
This tip follows the same principle as the last; the difference is the bulking up will be visible instead of hidden under your jeans. If you’ve never heard of boot cuffs and you have narrow calves, you’ll probably love this fashion find. Boot cuffs are a lot like leg warmers except they only go around the widest part of your calf and generally stop right under the knee. They are ordinarily crocheted and thick. Boot cuffs are sold in a variety of styles and colors so you can find some that fit your personal style. Leg warmers are another good bulky solution that are also a fashion statement. One thing to keep in mind is that leg warmers normally cover from your heel or ankle to right below your knee. If you have slim calves but normal size ankles, the extra material can make the boots too tight or look strange in the foot bed and ankle areas. Leg warmers can also be bunchy and create lumps where you don’t want them, so just be aware of that when trying on pairs to widen your calves.
Tip #3 Take Your Tall Boots to a Cobbler!
Taking your boots to a professional to have the calf circumference reduced won’t come cheap. This is why we only recommend doing this if the other two tips aren’t working for you. Before you make the investment, consider how much the boots are worth to you. If they are not made of quality materials and online reviews say they last a few months before tearing up, it’s probably smarter to find a pair specifically designed for narrow calves. If the boots you bought are real leather, designer, tall boots that can’t be replaced the cobbler is a good option. Just make sure you have a look at their previous work before you hand over a $400 pair to a shoe repairman.
At least one of these tips is sure to help you get the fit you need from your tall boots! Now all you need is the perfect outfit and you’ll be ready to rock your tall boots this winter.
