The Beast GTS 26 is Brooks’ most supportive running shoe. It has always occupied this position for the brand and for many years remained largely unchanged.

The latest model attempts to bring the model up to date, with a new, sleeker-looking upper that sits neatly in the Brooks brand lineup.
The Beast GTS 26 uses a variety of features to aid stability and is one of, if not the most supportive, shoes on the market.

The Glycerin GTS 23 aims to balanced premium level cushioning and a smooth riding experience with general stability. While many brands have now reduced the number of support-type shoes in their ranges, Brooks still offers models across price points, and the Glycerin GTS 23 remains one of the most premium models to combine cushioning and control on sale today.

Design
The main difference between the Beast GTS 26 and the Glycerin GTS 23 is in their midsoles. The Beast uses the brand’s DNA LOFT v3 nitrogen-infused foam, while the Glycerin uses the more premium DNA Tuned foam.

DNA LOFT v3 nitrogen-infused foam is a single-density midsole unit and offers a good combination of shock absorbency and durability in a reasonably lightweight unit.
DNA Tuned foam uses different-sized cells in the manufacturing process to provide soft cushioning in the rearfoot and more responsive cushioning in the forefoot. While the stack of cushioning is the same in both the Beast and Glycerin, the Glycerin feels significantly softer and more responsive.

Fit
The Beast GTS 26 fits true to size in terms of length and width. It is available (for both men and women) in a range of width fittings, so it should be easy to find a good fit.

For users of orthotics, the innersole or sockliner in the Beast is a little thicker (and more comfortable) than many alternatives, and when removed, provides more volume in the shoe to fit orthotics comfortably.
The Glycerin GTS 23 fits a little smaller than usual when compared to other models from the brand. I have found in this model that around 90% of buyers had gone up a half size compared to other models from both Brooks and other brands.
The upper of the Glycerin is a triple jacquard construction and has a small degree of natural stretch to it. This makes it very accommodating and allows for a little natural ‘wiggle-room’, giving a very comfortable fit.
Performance
The Beast is a very firm riding shoe. The combination of the midsole cushioning, GuideRails and straighter last all contribute to its overall stability and control.

While the cushioning is a nitrogen-infused foam, the geometry and function of the shoe mean it remains a ‘clunky’, heavy-feeling shoe.
For those who require the highest level of support and control, it works very well, but it is now perhaps better suited for daily use, walking and general wear rather than running.

The Glycerin GTS 23 is a soft, plush ride that, in this ‘GTS’ guise, also provides highly functional support and control.
The soft cushioning on heel strike and responsive toe-off make it a joy to run in, and it excels at any pace. I’ve run easy hour-long recovery runs at an 8-minute mile pace as well as tempo efforts at a 6-minute mile pace during a recent marathon block in the shoe, and found it equally as proficient at any speed.

Control is highly effective for a wide range of runners requiring control for both overpronation and supination, and one of the best picks on the market right now.
My Verdict
Both the Beast and Glycerin are great, high-performing models and while they both feature the brand’s signature support feature, GuideRail Technology System, they do offer different running experiences.
The Beast remains the most supportive running shoe on sale today, while the Glycerin offers support but in a premium cushioned package.
Perhaps the Beast is now best suited to those wanting a highly supportive model for daily use rather than specifically running. It is a very firm feeling model and immediately gives an overwhelming sense of support and control.
The Glycerin focuses on comfort and plush cushioning, with support being an additional feature, albeit a very effective one.

I have found from personal experience of fitting both models in my store, that the Beast is more often chosen by non-runners and often by older and heavier people who have foot issues requiring the highest level of support and control. They seek out the Beast after trying light, flimsy shoes that have usually failed them after just a few weeks of wear.
The Glycerin GTS 23 is simply a premium support shoe (that sits along side it’s neutral relation, the Glycerin 23) that excels for daily training and offers a plush, supportive ride.

Both shoes are excellent in their own way and both provide excellent support and control.
